I have an idea

(This sampler is from Gwen Marston’s Liberated Medallion book)
I’m thinking out loud here, so I’m not sure if this will work. But let me explain and then you can voice your opinion…
I LOVE these sampler type of quilts. And I really want to make one. But I don’t want to have to design the layout until I have a bunch of blocks to play with. And it’s always more fun to do these things with friends. And people have been requesting another quilt-along….
(This one is from the book American Quilts in the Modern Age)
So, here’s my idea….
What if we did a really laid back block-of-the-month quilt along?
- Each month we would vote on the block we want to experiment or play with.
- Make as many as you want, in either liberated or traditional method.
- After 12 months we play with different layouts and put our blocks together in a sampler quilt.
- Mine, of course… I will have all the measurements posted so that if you want some instructions to follow you can follow mine.
- But you don’t have to follow my instructions. Just use the quilt-along as an inspirational guideline.
(This is a photo of the process in Gwen Marston’s Liberated Medallion book)
Is this a crazy idea??? Or do you think it would be fun???
We could start in September. Nothing like jumping in all at once. Right? I know September starts in two days. But I’ve been on vacation and all…

Me too! Love a new QAL.
Great idea:)
have never done a QAL, but have wanted to….so count me in (I’ll give it my best shot)
I’m in! I’d love to do a QAL to keep me sewing.
I think I’d like to do it, too! My QAL quits are usually the ones I finish and I should be able to manage a block a month!
I have the book-I luv the book -I want to make this quilt!!!!!!!
I am FOR SURE on board! yeah!
PS I forgot to say that I totally luv your blog!!!!!!
Sounds fun to me!
Will you post intructions for each block?
I will post instructions for the block we choose to make each month. Everyone is free to follow it exactly or use it as a guideline towards your own creation.
Anita
Hey – I’ve done a couple block-a-week QALs. I’m sure I can manage one a month!!
Oh goodie…..I am definitely in, I always love your ideas and how they all just come together. Count me in..hugs…Susan hey, got that mojo back..yayayayayaya
This is so, so tempting!
Count me in! Sounds fun.
Tempting, tempting….
I just found your blog through my friend, Deborah. This sounds so very tempting.
Just broke my leg so I’m off work for 3 months. Sounds like a fun project to keep me busy
i adore medallion quilts and would love to do this. all the ones you put up are gorgeous. my only problem is the math to make each row “work” could you help with that? i have oodles of block books with all kinds of lovelies. im on board
I will provide instructions for the way my quilt will finish. But each person can choose to follow me or do their own thing. I’ll help as much as I can.
Anita
That medallion sampler is fabulous! A quilt along to work towards it would be awesome!
I love the idea -Anita. I’m in.
I’m in Anita – this will be fun!
That’s a good idea. I’m in also Anita. I love this sampler.
Oh this sounds like so much fun! I would love to sew along!
Hmmmmm….just started a Dear Jane quilt, have a bunch of UFOs, school work, new job, gotta move soon, kids’ stuff. Oh well… There’s always room for another little project, right? I’m in!
Great idea for a QAL! I would like to join and experiment with colors and fabric choices
I might play along too!
What a fun idea. I am seriously thinking about it 🙂
Very, very tempting….. and I have some leftover blocks. Seriously thinking about this. How about baskets for the first month’s block? Or stars?
Sounds fun! That is one of my favorite quilts in Gwen’s book. I’ll try to keep up and it will be a good way to put some orphan blocks to use!
This will be my first QAL. Thank you for doing this!
Bev
Much as I’d love to be a good girl and say…I’d better sit this out and continue finishing what I’ve already begun…I know myself better than that! Temptation will win out and I’ll be joining in. Oh well, may as well jump in with both feet!
All this is just to say…I really enjoy the quilt alongs you put together and never fail to learn something new. Thank you for the time you put into your excellent tutorials. It’s fun to virtually quilt along with you 😉
This looks like a fun project, but I’m on the fence right now with other WIPs to clear off my table. Will you be starting a Flickr group for people to post their pics?
A little tempting never hurt anyone? 😉
Of course I love the idea!

This is enticing! I recently saw a sampler quilt I liked on Flickr with this kind of arrangement, sans medallion. It keeps coming to mind…..Then your blog…. serendipity?
I seem to be a little late to the party but I am just starting to feel like with the kids back in school that I have time for something like this. And I have wanted to make a sampler quilt with blocks all different sizes for SO long. I love this idea and what better way to do it than as a group where we can inspire each other. Thanks, Anita! You are such a go-getter.
I’m in! Thanks for getting this going. Should be fun!
I think I’d just need to add a few small things to my chaotic design wall and I could have a quilt ready to go. Do you wanna come and help my do the layout? 🙂
But I do think my quilt needs a basket block or two…or 4? I’ve never made a basket block before….
I’m excited to see how your medallion quilt progresses!
Instead of watching from the sidelines this time, I think I’ll join in :D! Fun, fun. Thanks Anita!
