The Biggest Finish of the Year
September 19, 2011 § 41 Comments
It’s finished! It’s finally done! (do the Happy Dance!) I sewed the last stitch in the binding last night and immediately threw it in the washing machine. Whew. What a project.
- 94″ square
- Started with cutting 5″ charms
- 484 Half-square triangles
- Straight-line quilting
- Quilter’s Dream wool batting
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who swapped scraps with me. I love that there are some of my fabrics and some of your fabrics. There’s a little bit of everything in this quilt. I do have to confess that I think I might have cut up one or two fat quarters that I especially wanted in there. But the rest of the quilt top was pretty much all scraps.
The bad news (or maybe good news) is that I STILL have some charm squares leftover. So I think I need to make a charity quilt out of the leftovers. The leftovers of the leftovers.
The original plan started with my leftover Kaffe scraps. But it grew from there. There are fabrics from all sorts of projects.
There are Halloween scraps leftover from a placemat swap.
There are Christmas scraps leftover from potholders last year. And baby quilt scraps. There are even some Reproduction scraps. There’s just a little bit of everything.
Whatever I saved in $$ on the front by using scraps, I definitely spent on the back. When I saw this Philip Jacob’s fabric, I just had to put it on the back. Nine whole yards to match up the repeats! But if I ever need a rest from the crazy, scrappy front, I can simply flip the quilt over and enjoy the back.
Here’s the test run on the bed. I definitely need to go get some red, or pink, or orange pillowcases. At least something a little brighter than those soft blue ones.
I am so happy to have this project finished!
Another gorgeous quilt, Anita! I LOVE it!!!

WOW! Anita, this is beautiful. A wonderful use of fabric (scraps or otherwise) if you ask me!
it’s awesome!
and black pillowcases would look nice with this pretty new quilt.
Oh Anita this is so fantastic !!! You must be so pleased with it. You could use some of your leftover backing fabric for pillowcases.
Well done for finishing such a big project.
Absolutely Gorgeous! I can’t believe how well all those different scraps look together. Christmas fabric? Really? You did a great job as always. I used your notebook cover tute finally and it was great. do you have a place for such pictures on Flicker?
oh man. I’m lost for words!
omg I’m speechless – it is STUNNING! Truly spectacular – and I also love the fabric you chose for the back! And I have a technical question – you used wool batting and you washed it. Did you dry it in the machine or lay it flat?
Totally gorgeous!
OMG that quilt is GORGEOUS!!!!!
It’s stunning Anita. The colours are gorgeous, the back divine and the quilting is perfect!

After seeing your gorgeous quilt made with such a variety of scraps, it makes me wonder why I spend so much time carefully picking out my fabric for my quilts. Your fabrics are getting along just nicely even thou they are so different.
Oh my gosh! I am just flabergasted – it is gorgeous. It makes me afraid to throw any scraps away. Truly a masterpiece.
Congratulations! This is a stunner!

Too lovely Anita. You did a great job. Love the quilting and the back. All wonderful. Thanks for sharing the joy of completion with us.
This is so lovely. I still have to learn how to design a quilt by color and value. Right now I just am a good copier…so I might copy your layout. So, so pretty!
Congratulations – It’s a wonderful quilt!
It is stunning, Anita! Your quilting makes it sing! The backing is so perfect! Congratulations!!

Great job! It is stunning!
It’s beautiful! Woohoo!!
I think you need bright blue pillowcases. You could make them, and then they could have a red or orange contrasting strip…
Wowsers!
AWWWSOME!!!
Oh! I just saw your blog post on this beautiful finish! Congratulations :o) Sometimes I think we get so caught up on how fun it is to start new projects that we forget how good it feels to actually finish them too.
Anita, it’s amazing. I’m so inspired by your scrap quilts ~
i hope you are continually patting yourself on the back for a job well done on this amazing (heirloom!) scrappy quilt. it’s so so so beautifully made. thanks for the details about your process in the latter post, too. i enjoyed reading those. i’m off to fav this on flickr and add it to the top of my bucket list of quilts.

I love it and am so inspired to make my own scrap quilt! Great job and thanks for sharing.
This is one of the prettiest scrap quilts I have ever seen.
Hi Anita
Which method do you use to make the half square triangles in this lovely quilt?
