The holiday baking continues.  I really need that scale… soon!  I hear you my International friends.  A recipe that calls for a stick of butter is like the ones that say a medium-sized onion or a large egg. I never know what that means. Medium in whose eyes?  Or how about 1/4 cup chopped parsley. I always wonder if they mean before or after it is chopped.

For the record, American butter (usually) comes in a box with four individually wrapped packages of butter.  The whole box is 1 pound or 2 cups of butter. Each individual wrapped package inside is 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup or more fondly called “a stick” of butter.

Anybody else confused with colloquial baking and/or cooking terms?  The more I bake with a scale the more I’m finding how much easier it is! It’s nice that the King Arthur Flour web site has some recipes where you can choose weight or volume.  But it seems that grams would be even easier than ounces.  Oy.
